Fossombrone

The funeral compound of the Cissoni, dating back to the 2nd century AD, is located in the village of Calmazzo along the route of Via Flaminia, between Furlo and Fossombrone, where in Roman times there stood a vicus (small aggregate of houses). This "family tomb" is made up of a large rectangular area of about 135 square meters, bordered by a fence made up of ashlared stones and large stone slabs of local origin, of which only a few elements are preserved. The burial ground is monumentalized by two altars, made of marble on a base with steps. The burial sites, one by cremation and two by interment, occupied most of the enclosure: one of the burials by interment was constituted by a chest made of stone slabs, while the other two burials had a "libation tube", a vertical duct through which family members of the dead passed offerings and libations to the deceased. Other cremations were found in the northwest corner of the compound. The burials have brought to light interesting burial kits made up of lamps, ceramic furnishings, glassware and a gold necklace, preserved and exhibited in the "A. Vernarecci" Civic Museum of Fossombrone.
