Valle del Musone

Osimo

The city of Osimo, located on a plateau at 265 meters above sea level overlooking the Musone Valley, presents evidence of activity dating back to the Upper Paleolithic, as seen by the numerous flint objects found in its territory. The first Picene settlements developed in the 9th c. BC on the hilltop and the neighboring highlands of Monte San Pietro where, alongside evidence of settlements, there are the remains of its necropolises. The Senone Gauls also settled in these areas: some Celtic tombs have been found in San Filippo, not far from the center of the city. A Roman colony since 157 BC, the year of its founding, in the 1st c. BC Osimo played an important role during the civil wars when Pompeo arrived in these territories and here recruited numerous soldiers. It was later occupied by Caesar, on his way to Rome after the crossing of the Rubicon. The importance of the city was maintained until the middle of the 6th century AD when it was widely disputed between the Goths and the Byzantines during the Greek-Gothic war.
