Fano

Located in the city center of Fano, in today's Piazza Amiani, the Montanari Multimedia Resource Center was opened to public use thanks to the recovery of the structures of the former Luigi Rossi school building. This school, built between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century following the demolition of the sixteenth-century convent of the nuns of San Filippo, holds the ruins of ancient Roman structures in its underground areas. Here we are at the crossroads of important routes: Via Arco di Augusto, corresponding to the Decumanus Maximus of the Roman urban fabric, and Corso Matteotti, its perpendicular cardo, not far from the area of the city forum which has not yet been localized. In the Augustan era, the area was occupied by several buildings, probably private homes, which in the Claudian era were demolished for the construction of a public building: a large rectangular hall with a front portico made up of four Corinthian columns which faced the Decumanus Maximus. Inside the hall, on the bottom wall there was a podium on which the two main statues were placed: the dynastic couple Claudio and Britiannico, now in the Malatestian Civic Museum. The rest of the statuary circle must have been placed on individual bases located inside the hall. Internally the walls were lined with Bardiglio marble and decorated with polychrome marble. Thanks to recent discoveries and the results of new investigations, what had been erroneously identified as a natatio (open-air bathing pool) pertaining to a gym is now recognized as the Augusteum of Fanum Fortunae, a prestigious building among the most sumptuous in the region dedicated to the Imperial cult.

Porti e approdi nelle Marche antiche
