Valle del Misa

Senigallia

The "La Fenice" archaeological area develops below the city's theater of the same name and internally retains an entire Roman city block. Descending into the area one will relive the experience of Roman daily life: in fact, you can see the intersection of two large road axes (a cardo and a decumanus) paved with large white stones on which are still visible the grooves left by the continuous passing of wagons. At the intersection of the two streets, you can see a public fountain, a quadrangular tub paved in brick with water delivered by lead pipes. There are three documented domus, but only one is fully visible. A dwelling located in the south-east area, this is a typical atrium house with, in succession, one taberna, three cubicula, one wing and another room located west of the tablinum and perhaps a triclinium. Those rooms open on an atrium, whose remains are recognizable in the concrete floor pavementing. At the center of the atrium is the impluvium, a pool useful for the collection of rainwater, paved in stones in a herringbone pattern. In the Middle Ages a church, today no longer visible, was constructed in this area, around which a funerary area subsequently developed, some of which is still visible. Inside the area, along with the archaeological museum, an educational path was set up supported by explanatory panels and archaeological materials from the territory and the city of Senigallia.
