In Colombarone an archaeological site of great interest, dating from the end of the 3rd to the 19th century AD, was brought to light inside the S. Bartolo Natural Park. In Roman times, this area, and more generally the area adjacent to Via Flaminia, was was widely inhabited, with dwellings consisting mostly of farms. It is in this context that at the end of the 3rd century BC a luxurious villa was built as the rural residence of a rich landowner. This structure featured an entrance articulated around a porticoed courtyard, a main area consisting of two banquet rooms, a thermal bath, the residential area and a large decentralized environment. Subjected to numerous modifications and restoration works, in the 6th c. AD the villa changed its function. Some sectors were abandoned, while the receptive area became a large, apsed place of worship flanked by a bell tower, and the rest of the site was occupied by a cemetery site. Thus, the luxurious rural villa became the Christian church known as Basilica of Saint Cristoforo ad Aquilam. Between the 7th and the 10th c. AD, the basilica itself underwent repeated works that transformed it into a simple church. Work is currently underway for the construction of a small museum where the materials of the various historical periods found on the site will be exhibited.
